I just bought a Model 32 with 30" barrels that are marked Modified and Improved Modified. It is marked Krieghoff Model 32 and has Bohler-Laufstahl on one side of the barrels and Europa Corporation Miami Florida. The serial number is 14XX. I was wondering when this shotgun was made. I plan on having Briley install choke tubes in it, since I shoot more Skeet than Trap. Thanks.

Pop an E-mail to Krieghoff and they'll let you know manufacture date.

All German guns I have owned including my K-80 ( Sig's and HK's ) have a two digit date code on the receiver. A = 0, B=1, etc with no I used. For example a KE would be 94 mfg.

"Bohler- Laufstahl" is the type of steel used in the barrel, Bohler being the type.

Early K guns have the characteristic German date code on the bottom of the breech, like 7-64 or 764 for July of 1964. Some have these stamps, some don't. If the barrels are not original to the gun, you will have to contact Dupont, whose mark is on the gun. Good luck with a gun as early as yours. It has probably been shot a few hundred times.

Thanks for the responses. I found 767 on the barrels, but they have a four digit number of 3XXX on them and I suspect they are not original to the frame. I'll email Krieghoff and find out. Thanks again.

Yup, in my experience, 1967 guns are in the 6000 range.

Yikes! In my experience, 1969-70 guns are in the 5000 range. I have found 6000 guns to be in the 1971-2 range.
This whole K-32 scene is such a fascinating learning process. I wish Hal would write a book. However, I believe I perhaps understand why he won't.....

Maybe my 6000 series gun is newer than I thought. The barrels with the date marks are long gone, on an ATA shooter's K80. He will not sell them back to me.

The gun serial is a pretty early one - certainly well before 1967 in my opinion.

Barrels are not original as you state.

Check receiver for numbers like 565 meaning May 1965. The letter coding as mentioned started later - around 1976 IIRC...

The "month year" date code is on the barrel flat, not the receiver.

Thought some of the early guns were. Many German manufacturers date coded receiver as well in those days. My Merkel is and I thought my dads K32 was also....may be mistaken though.

I have a Model 32 with serial number 55XX and the barrel flat is stamped 766.

5500 is around 1969-70. Probably an older barrel renumbered to the gun (very common) or a new barrel that lay around Ulm or at Europa for a while before being mated up to a gun. If the barrel has an "R" on the flat, it was probably an unnumbered barrel - such as a replacement or additional barrel added later. Those can be numbered and the numbers will appear original.
It is usually relatively easy to recognize a renumbered barrel; metal is ground away and a new number applied. Sometimes the metal is removed crudely, in a way that leaves a ledge. Others have been ground/polished in a way that does not leave a ledge (sloped on an angle), but the proof mark or date, etc. will be a little weak from the removal of metal above them. Hope this helps.

Rebel Sympathy - you are absolutely correct. I just received a reply from Krieghoff and my serial number indicates it was manufactured and shipped in September of 1970, as a four barrel set. Obviously it is not that now as all I have is a 32" set of double barrels. I have read one of your previous posts and you disclosed that you have or had a 32 San Remo with a serial number in the 55xx range. My 32 is just three more numbers than your San Remo. My guess is that they were made during the same week.

I would reckon you are likely right about the close proximity with regard to our manufacturing dates. I remember owning a Crown #5558, and a San Remo#5758, but no longer own either 4-bbl set, having immersed myself (SUBmersed would be more accurate) in the commerce of firearms trading. (I have a friend who owns San Remo set #5575(?), since new.) My newest Model 32 "pet" is San Remo set, #10086. It's a sweetheart, and graciously accepts the blame for all my misses without protest.... Had it about three years now. Most of the time it seems I have one or two Model 32's around here for sale......

Dano: You are correct about the German date code. I see it on the newer K-80's. However, in the Model 32 era Krieghoff did not use the code. The dates were stamped on the barrel monoblock by month/year (ex: 10/69) by the proof house in Ulm for the date the barrel was proofed. Typically, that barrel would have then been used a month or two later on a gun (but not always). Using those dates, we are able to construct a fairly accurate base for learning dates of manufacture by serial number range.

Later, by the mid-1970's, the proof house just stamped the last two digits of the year (ex: 75) on the bottom of the monoblock. And now, Krieghoff uses the German date code to which you refer - located on the receiver top edge, right side. "DE" = Made In Germany and (example) "BE" = 14 (2014), and on the barrel monoblock.
